Speak Their Language
Management Matter$ with Mathura #1
When I was part of the Organizing Team for the Global Gamechangers Summit, I had the challenge of bringing together a diverse team to run a 48-hour non-stop livestream conference. It was a massive undertaking, and honestly, not everyone was thrilled about the workload.
Each person on the team had different motivations—some were excited by the impact of the event, others were more focused on the technical aspects, and a few just saw it as an overwhelming responsibility. If I had simply told them, "We need to pull this off because it's important," I wouldn’t have gotten far.
Instead, I had to speak their lingo.
For the production team, I had to show them the thrill of pulling off a groundbreaking 48-hour livestream—a challenge that would push boundaries for the team. For the content team, it was about recognizing the incredible impact of the speakers' experiences and how their stories could truly inspire the audience. And for the marketing team, we had to see the event through the eyes of the students—understanding the value it could bring to their future and why it was worth getting the word out.
By appealing to their passions and strengths, each team member saw the vision in a way that resonated with them. They weren’t just following orders—they were personally invested. And because of that, we made miracles happen.
Takeaway: Tailor Your Message to Your Audience
As leaders, we often assume that people will automatically buy into our ideas. But the reality is, it’s on us to help them see the vision in a way that works for them.
Understand what drives your team – Different people are motivated by different things.
Frame the vision in a way that excites them – Show them how their role matters.
Speak their language – If you want people to come on board, meet them where they are.
Next time you need to get people aligned, ask yourself: Am I speaking to them in a way that inspires them? The right approach can turn even the most hesitant individuals into passionate team players.
